Un mes irrepetible / A unique month

Yes, last month has been so unique for me that I wanted to share it with a post.

ISMIR 2014

From October 27th to November 1st, I attended the 15h International Conference of Music Information Retrieval in Taipei, Taiwan. ISMIR is by far my favorite conference, where I meet most of my colleagues, get to know the advancements in the field, and get fresh ideas for my research. This year, it was a busy edition for me. We presented some work related to the PHENICX project, where we try to apply MIR techniques for classical music, in particular for symphonic repertoire and within the context of a concert, so including real-time description. In addition, we had several meetings of the society board, where I take part as a member. Finally, I was co-authoring a poster on the robustness of low-level features, another one on melodic similarity of flamenco music, in the scope of our COFLA project, and presenting a demo of our MIR.EDU library for music education! A lot for a single week!

proxy  It was a great conference: amazing city and landscape, very good organization, nice presentations and research outcomes, and good perspectives for next year in Málaga, Spain.

After coming back from ISMIR, I had my tenured defense on November 5th. After some years working at UPF and a long waiting period due to economic restrictions, I got tenured assistant professor thanks to the Serra Hunter program of the Catalan government. I am really happy for that!

One week later, this Wednesday, I attended a workshop in Madrid that the Spanish Association of Symphonic Orchestras (AEOS) and BBVA foundation devoted, in its first day, to the new challenges and opportunities that technology offers for orchestras. I presented the PHENICX project, including use cases and the technologies that the different partners are researching and developping, integrated in our prototype. You can find here my slides and complementary material. It has already appeared in press.

Although we are not far from summer, I now feel I need some rest!

Symposium on audio and multimedia signal processing, CMNE 2011

I am co-organizing, together with Rui Pedro Paiva (University of Coimbra) a symposium in Audio and Multimedia Signal Processing that I hope will be a nice event. The conference (CMNE) is targeted towards master and PhD students presenting their new ideas and advancements on the field, and is willing to foster collaborations between Spain and Portugal. I attach the call for papers here, I hope it will be a success, mainly for researchers from Spain and Portugal! In addition, it takes place in the wonderful city of Coimbra in Portugal.

This is the first time I am writing a call for papers in English, Spanish and Portuguese, I hope there are not big mistakes!

The forthcoming Congress on Numerical Methods in Engineering – CMNE 2011 will take place in Coimbra (Portugal), from 14-17 June, and is organized by the APMTAC - Associação Portuguesa de Mecânica Teórica, Aplicada e Computacional in association with SEMNI – Sociedad Española de Métodos Numéricos en Ingeniería, as a result of a longstanding collaboration between the two Institutions.

This initiative should lead to a deepening of the collaboration and scientific understanding of Spain and Portugal within the Numerical Methods framework.

CMNE 2011 (http://www.itecons.uc.pt/cmne2011) will be the ideal forum to air the most recent advances and future trends in numerical and computational methods in Engineering. It is open to students and experts interested in their development and application. (http://www.itecons.uc.pt/cmne2011/brochura_CMNE2011.pdf).

Mini-symposium in "Audio and Multimedia Signal Processing": co-organized by Rui Pedro Paiva (Univ. Coimbra) and Emilia Gómez (Music Technology Group, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona).

Topics: Music Information Retrieval (focusing on audio signal processing) and other areas related to audio and multimedia signal processing.

We encourage the submission of works by master and PhD students even in a preliminary phase.

Abstract submission:
Abstract should have a maximum length of 250 words. A template is available at http://www.itecons.uc.pt/cmne2011/pt/area_autores.htm, as well as indications for abstract submission.

INFLA 2010

Last week I attended a small conference on flamenco research in Seville: INvestigacion y FLAmenco (INFLA 2010). It’s the second edition of an interdisciplinary conference on flamenco research, and one of the few existing ones devoted to flamenco music. I took part as a organizer and scientific committee member.

There were presentations related to flamenco research from a varied set of disciplines including (ethno)musicology, literature, medicine, computer science and music education. In addition, the conference included two concerts as side activities of the Flamenco Bienal, one of the most relevant flamenco events in Seville. Researchers came mainly from Spain but also from USA, France and Mexico. The conference was in spanish.

It was an enriching event, although there were many different approaches and methodologies followed, it’s sometimes difficult to understand everything. I particulary enjoyed a talk on a practical approach to flamenco music in primary education. The author has developped a blog for teaching flamenco in primary education, which includes a set of activities and teaching material.

I also liked a talk on flamenco dancing and interaction between flamenco performers. Finally, I was very interested on a study on the use of semiotic analysis to study the origin and evolution of the “petenera” style, by JM Hernández Jaramillo and Lénica Reyes. They have developed a computational model that analyses scores. I hope they will publish this work soon.

We also had a presentation of the COFLA project by Paco Gómez.

I hope there will be more editions of this conference, I will definitively contribute to it!
