III INterdisciplinary Conference in FLAmenco Research (INFLA 2012) and II International Workhop of Folk Music Analysis (FMA 2012)

I am co-organizing an international scientific event in my city, Seville, which is in fact, the most wonderful event I can think of at the moment: flamenco, folk music, music computing, april, Sevilla!

You can find at the web all the needed information. I am very happy as I think it will be an amazing event and an oportunity for everyone to come to the Feria de Sevilla this year 🙂

I hope many people will join.

Remote contribution to ISMIR 2011

It’s a pity I cannot attend this year’s ISMIR, as the place is very nice (I have some very good friends in Miami) and the program seems very nice too. It’s not easy with two small children to be away for so long!! In any case there are some small contributions to MIREX I have been involved in, leaded by our PhD students Justin Salamon (predominant melody estimation) and Jose Zapata (tempo estimation). We had very good results. You can have a look at our MIREX poster for a brief overview and read the abstracts for more details.

My school’s 125th anniversary

Last Saturday the school I studied in Seville celebrated its 125th Anniversary. I had the change of attending the celebration and taking part in a book that gathers the experience of 125 old students. It’s amazing to see how our school has changed over the years, read what people have become and how school influenced them.

I met old friends from long time ago and talked about children, work and old times. The book is available if you want to read my old memories, I’m in page 244! I’m very proud that they chose me.

Multimodality, Music Processing and Flamenco Research

This week, I am attending a focused seminar in Multimodal Music Processing.  The organizers managed to gather together an amazing group of researchers from different areas in music technology. We are trying to discuss on the challenges related to the combination of different modalities of information into music processing systems.

What do we mean by multi-modality?

A “Modality” can be defined as “any of the various types of sensation, such as vision or hearing” or even “any of the five senses”. How to take advantage of information from our five senses into music processing systems? If we also consider the “context” and the “user” as an information source, we then have a huge amount of information to be efficiently combined.

This is mainly the challenge of all of the area, dealing and combining data and information for a particular task.

I tried to apply multimodality to my current project in flamenco music and I realized we are facing a multi-modal, multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural problem.

–       Multi-modal: we are dealing with the integration of different knowledge sources: music, expression, context, cultural information, anthropological data, listener judgments, text, image and movement.

–       Multi-disciplinary: each modality formalizes differently, so how to formalize knowledge from other disciplines into music processing systems: music content processing, knowledge discovery, musicology (flamenco scholars), cognition, anthropology and literature.

–       Multi-cultural: How to refine music processing systems to be significant to people from different musical backgrounds and cultures.

So I am gathering nice ideas at this seminar!

Jornadas de la Sociedad(e) Ibérica de TEcnologia MUsical, 2010

In December (16th-17th) I will be attending the first meeting of SITEMU (Sociedad(e) Ibérica de Tecnologia Musical) in Madrid,  for spanish and portuguese researchers interested in music technology. The number of researchers in this area in Spain has increased a lot, which is very good for your community. I hope I will be able to meet many people and get to know other institutions interested in audio and music content processing.  Registration is free, so anyone interested in welcome. This is the web page.

Symposium on audio and multimedia signal processing, CMNE 2011

I am co-organizing, together with Rui Pedro Paiva (University of Coimbra) a symposium in Audio and Multimedia Signal Processing that I hope will be a nice event. The conference (CMNE) is targeted towards master and PhD students presenting their new ideas and advancements on the field, and is willing to foster collaborations between Spain and Portugal. I attach the call for papers here, I hope it will be a success, mainly for researchers from Spain and Portugal! In addition, it takes place in the wonderful city of Coimbra in Portugal.

This is the first time I am writing a call for papers in English, Spanish and Portuguese, I hope there are not big mistakes!
